There is a wealth of information about family history on the Internet. If you are interested in getting started in genealogy research, blogs would give you some understanding of the terms and approaches in the study of family history. Cyndi’s List.com is a wonderful resource. It provides many blogs and a huge number of resources to investigate.

  • Some blogs are about a particular family. If you find a familiar name, you might find relatives there. But whether they are related may not matter, if the site and information helps you understand how to search for your family.
  • Some blogs are concerned with a location. If you find a blog that is concerned with the place where your family had a lot of members, you may find them engaged in business or active in a church or buried in a cemetery in the area. Several blogs are concerned with countries from which American emigrants originated. You may find excellent sources and information there to help you break through a brick wall. French, Scottish, Irish, and English nationalities have blogs that focus on their immigration practices.
  • There are blogs about genealogy books. These may help you identify when your family has been documents and provide facts about their relation to historical events.
  • Genealogy.com, Ancestry.com, and Family Tree.com all have blogs that will keep you informed about what’s new in their archives and how to search their sites. If you are interested in buying a subscription to a site, it would be good to know what they can provide that is new or unique.
  • Some blogs are authored by an individual and may give insight into methods they found successful. It makes you feel like you have a friend to help you out.
  • There are blogs that may help you write a story about your family. You may be able to turn you family story into a romantic history or dramatic narrative of a famous event.
  • There are some blogs that are specific to racial groups. Jewish genealogy and African American genealogy have blogs that support their search for ancestors. One blog identifies names of runaway slaves.
  • The blog of Columbus Public Library Genealogy and Local History reports news, notes, and new additions to their holdings. The library is the area’s primary repository for genealogical and historical research materials.
  • Some blogs are written by professional genealogists and offer professional advice and recommendations about software and innovations in genealogical research.
